How to create and configure Groups and Templates in MDaemon

The Group Manager is used to create Groups and manage which accounts belong to them. Groups have a number of different uses and functions. Templates are defined sets of account settings that can be assigned to specific Groups.

With the Group Manager, using the Group Properties menu, you can assign a template to a Group. A template applied to one or more groups will have the designated account settings locked for group members. The assigned template will control these settings rather than the Account Editor. This allows you to control a variety of account settings for group members.

This configuration can be set up in both MDaemon and MDaemon Remote Administration. This article covers both interfaces. 

Follow the steps below to set up this configuration in MDaemon.

In this example, we'll create a group and add users to the group. Then we'll create a template with defined options for the Web Services menu and apply the template to the group.

  1. Open MDaemon
  2. Select Accounts
  3. Select Groups & Templates...
  4. Click Group Manager
  5. Click New group
  6. Enter a Group name and description (Group01 in this example).

  8. Select Group01 
  9. Click Add or remove accounts from the selected group.

  10. Choose the accounts to add to the group (User01, User02, and User03 in this example).

  11. Click Ok and the users will be listed under the group.

  12. Click Template Manager
  13. Click New template
  14. Enter a template name (Template01 in this example).

  15. Click Ok
  16. Click Template01 under the Template Manager to view and select which options the template will control.

  17. Check the Web Services box for this example.
  18. Click Web Services under Template01

  19. Choose which options to apply to the group.

  20. Click Apply
  21. Click Ok to close the Groups & Templates menu.
  22. Reload the Groups & Templates menu again by selecting the Accounts menu from the Configuration Session.
  23. Select Groups & Templates... 
  24. Select Group01 under the Group Manager.
  25. Click the drop-down under Account Template (optional)
  26. Choose Template01

If you navigate to the Web Service menu in the Account Editor for one of the group users, the options will be greyed out and cannot be changed without changing the template applied to the group.

Follow the steps below to set up this configuration in Remote Administration.

Create the Template

  1. Login to Remote Administration as the Global Administrator
  2. Click Account Templates

  3. Click New
  4. Enter a template name (Template01 in this example).
  5. In this example, uncheck All possible account settings and all settings except Web Services.

  6. Click Apply
  7. Click Web Services
  8. Choose which options to apply to the group.

  9. Click Save and Close


Create the Group and apply the Template.

  1. Click Groups
    mdaemon_mdra_groups_menu
  2. Click New
  3. Enter Group01 for the group name and add a description.
  4. Click Apply this account template (optional) 
  5. Select Template01 from the drop-down box.

  7. Click Edit Group Memberships
  8. Add users to the group.

  10. Click Save and Close to finish creating and configuring the Group and Template.
